132,327 people infected with Hepatitis C, check-ups continue

Health Minister Ahmed Emad Eddin said that 132,327 people tested have been found to be infected with Hepatitis C virus (HCV), after check-ups to over 1.5 million peoplem as of April 30.

During a meeting at the National Council for Population on Thursday, the minister said that among infected people are university students, prisons inmates, blood donors, hospital patients, and citizens in 410 villages in Giza, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Assiut, Sohag, Qena, Luxor and Aswan governorates.

The ministry's comprehensive medical survey includes two axes. The first axis involves the examination of first year university students, prisoners, overseas travelers, blood donors, patients in the hospital's internal departments, as well as workers in the health sector; this, in accordance with the Prime Minister's Decision No. 2015 for the year 2016.

The second axis includes the examination of villagers, which started with a field survey to detect the virus in the village of Al-Barajil in the Mallawi district of Minya governorate on January 21 of this year, costing LE109,528,632.
