14 policemen detained over Ismailia prison-break

The prosecution office in Ismailia governorate ordered the detention of 14 policemen on Sunday for a period of four days pending investigations into a break-out from Al-Mostakbal Central Prison last week.

A senior police officer and a civilian were shot dead and a low-ranking policeman was injured on Thursday night when six prisoners escaped from the prison.

Sources in the Interior Ministry told Al-Masry Al-Youm that three of the escaped prisoners are affiliated with the terrorist group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, while the other three have been convicted of different crimes.

The state-run news agency MENA said on Monday that the detained policemen face charges of gross negligence in relation to the prison-break.

The policemen hold various ranks, including colonel, major, and first lieutenant, while most are from the lower ranks.
