2 killed, 7 injured in Giza building collapse

Two people died and five others were injured Tuesday morning when an old building collapsed in Omraneya, Giza.

The three-story building collapsed after a gas cylinder exploded at one of the apartments, security sources said.

The injured victims were taken to Om al-Masryeen hospital in Giza and the bodies were taken to the hospital's morgue.

Local authorities in Omraneya were instructed to check for potential effects of the collapse on neighboring houses.

Building collapses are common in Egypt due to the poor state of construction and various violations. For instance, some contractors illegally build more stories than permitted.

Thousands of buildings in Egypt are constructed in violation of safety conditions, and other buildings are rarely renovated.
