3 irrigation ministry officials arrested over bribes

The Administrative Control Authority has ordered the arrest of an engineer and two administrative officers at the Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry for allegedly receiving bribes.

The employees at the ministry’s Nile River protection department in Cairo are accused of receiving bribes worth LE100,000 in return for facilitations for the renewal of the license of a Nile club run by Ain Shams University.

Official sources at the ministry have also confirmed the allegations, adding that the suspects had been filmed while committing the crime last Sunday.

Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazi said in statements on Sunday that the ministry was planning to assign a committee to study all corruption complaints related to its activities.

A similar bribery scandal at the Agriculture Ministry had forced the resignation of former Minister Salah Helal in early September.
