58% of Egyptians unaware of Suez Crisis date: poll

Only a quarter of Egyptians are aware of the exact date of the British-French-Israeli military assault on Egypt in 1956 that came to avenge the nationalization of the Suez Canal by late President Gamal Abdel Nasser, according to a recent survey.

“The survey results reveal that only 23 percent of Egyptians were able to mention the correct year in which the tripartite aggression against Egypt happened, while 18 percent mentioned a wrong date, and 58 percent said they don’t know,” according to the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera), which conducted the survey as part of a series of polls measuring Egyptian’s knowledge of their nation’s history on the 59th anniversary of the major military campaign.

“Although the details of the Suez Crisis (also known as the Tripartite Aggression) are taught in school curriculums, knowledge among Egyptian youth is seemingly frail,” said the center. “The percentage of youth that mentioned the correct year…reached 13 percent, compared with 29 percent among those aged 50 years and above,” it added.
