Egypt’s tourism growth rate increases to 16.5 percent in 2018: Minister

Egypt’s Minister of Tourism Rania al-Mashat stated that the growth rate of tourism in Egypt increased to 16.5 percent in 2018, higher than the average global tourism rate increase, which reached 3.9 percent. Egypt’s tourism rate was the highest in North Africa for the same year, according to a report by the World Travel and Tourism Council.

During a dinner banquet in Switzerland organized by the permanent representative of Egypt to the UN in Geneva Alaa Youssef, Mashat said that the structural development program for enhancing the competitiveness of the tourism sector focused on achieving sustainable tourism development in line with the UN’s 17 goals for sustainable development.

Mashat will participate in the roundtable “Tourism financing for the 2030 Agenda” held by the United Nations’ World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in cooperation with the World Trade Organization on Thursday as part of the World Trade Organization’s 2019 activities.

The activities began July 3 and will end July 5 in Geneva, Switzerland with participation from key figures in the industry.
