Accountability condition for reconciliation with police: Doctors’ Syndicate

The Doctors' Syndicate has expressed approval of what it called “appeasement attempts” by security authorities to reconcile with the doctors community provided that legal accountability is ensured for police personnel involved in reported assaults on medical workers in recent months.

“Whoever commits a mistake should be punished so that that mistake is not repeated,” Mona Mina, general secretary of the Doctors' Syndicate, told Mehwar channel late Thursday as repeated reports of assaults by police on doctors ignited a wide-scale strike which has led to doctors at government-run hospitals providing free services in retribution.

“We hope there is a positive action, for example, we valued the Interior Ministry’s role in the Alexandria incident,” Mina added, referring to the latest assault by two police officers on doctors at Alexandria University Hospital, after which the ministry remanded the pair into custody.
