Agriculture becomes first solar-powered govt ministry

Agriculture Minister Salah Helal inaugurated the first solar power-run government agency late Tuesday.

The new system, which was applied at the Agriculture Ministry’s headquarters, comes as part of a national initiative to shift to clean, renewable energy at government facilities.

The event was attended by several government ministers, including the justice, planning and electricity ministers.

Helal said the initiative was launched under the auspices of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, and is designed to reduce climate change effects and alleviate pressure on electric power. He pointed out that the total cost for implementing the project at his ministry’s headquarters stands at LE4.5 million.

He said he hopes the ministry’s move will set an example for the use of solar energy in residential facilities.
