Arab League chief tells Iran to halt campaign against Bahrain

The Arab League secretary general called on Iran to stop what he called a “provocative campaign and media escalation against Bahrain” in a statement Monday.

Nabil al-Araby, a former Egyptian foreign minister, said a potential union between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia is a sovereign affair related to only those two countries and the GCC, and that no country has the right to interfere in the matter.

The possible move was announced at a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting Monday.

Last week, a state-related Islamic body in Iran called on its citizens “to protest against the American plan to annex Bahrain to Saudi Arabia and express their anger against the lackey regimes of [Bahrain’s] Khalifa and Saud.”

Araby said a failure to retract these statements would increase tensions with the Gulf council. He said backing off such rhetoric would help maintain security and stability in the Gulf region and relations between the Islamic republic and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
