Arab League Secretary General, UN Representative to Libya discuss Libyan crisis

The Arab League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit held a meeting on Monday with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya Ghasan Salme in Cairo to discuss the recent political and security developments in Libya.

Salama stated following the meeting that Libya is an important member in the Arab League, and that the Arab League must search for a permanent political solution to the Libyan crisis.

He called for a ceasefire in Tripoli, as well as returning safety and stability nationwide, and reaching an international and regional consensus to support the political process.

Libya has been mired in chaos since the NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. As well as the rivalry between the Government of National Accord and Haftar’s self-styled Libyan National Army, a myriad militias have vied for control of key cities, alongside periodic jihadi activity, according to the German-based newswire Deutsche Welle.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced in 2017 the appointment of Ghassan Salame of Lebanon as his Special Representative and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya. Salme brought to this position over three decades of experience in public service and academia.

In 2003, he served as the Political Adviser to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, where he played a crucial role in bringing together Iraqi factions.
