Arab parliaments thwart Turkish attempt to freeze Egypt’s IPU membership

Most of the Arab and Islamist parliaments attending the Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) 132nd session rejected the Turkish attempt to freeze Egypt’s membership and support the dissolved parliament of the Muslim Brotherhood, said chief of the Modern Egypt Party, Nabil De'bes.

The Civil Arab parties' organization submitted a message of appreciation to IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, thanking him for the union’s stance during its session over the ongoing membership of Egypt in the union, which has decided to consider the country's seat as vacant until its parliament is formed.

Mahmoud Nafaday, the organization's spokesperson, said proposed decisions during the session included an international parliamentary condemnation to terrorism taking place in Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq and Nigeria, as well the condemnation of the beheadings of Egyptians in Libya.

Hafaday added that the Iranian delegation was confronted after it tried to prove that the Decisive Storm, launched by Saudi Arabia, was an attack against Yemeni people.

The IPU's 132nd session was held in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi from 28 March to 1 April.
