Attorney-General challenges reduced verdict in celeb murder case

Attorney-General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud will challenge a verdict issued by Egypt's Court of Cassation that reduced a death sentence delivered by a lower court against Egyptian business tycoon Hisham Talaat Mostafa and his accomplice for the 2008 murder of Lebanese pop singer Suzanne Tamim.

The new verdict slapped Mostafa with 15 years in jail, while his accomplice, former police officer Mohsen al-Sokkary, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mahmoud said that prosecutors had charged the two men with premeditated murder, noting that Mostafa had paid al-Sokkary LE2 million to kill Tamim, provided him with her address in Dubai, and obtained a visa for him.

Mahmoud also said the court should have supported the prosecution in its demand for the harshest possible punishment for the defendants, since the evidence had proved both men guilty of malice aforethought.
