Cairo-Brussels flights suspended in wake of Brussels attacks

An informed source at EgyptAir said on Thursday that flights heading from Cairo to Brussels had been canceled for the third day in a row due to the closure of Brussels airport after Tuesday's terrorist attacks.

Dozens of people were killed in terrorist attacks on the metro and airport in the Belgian capital, prompting a security lockdown in the city and leaving thousands of travellers stranded.

EgyptAir normally operates four flights a week to Brussels, the EgyptAir source said, with flights departing at 10 a.m. Cairo time. Flights to Cairo are expected to resume as soon as the security lock-down in Brussels has been lifted, said the source.

Reuters quoted Belgian Health Minister Maggie De Block as saying that at least 31 people were killed in Tuesday's attacks, with some 260 wounded. He added the number could rise further as some victims were hard to identify.

Three suicide bombers have been identified by Belgian police, two at the airport and one at a metro station. However, a man-hunt is underway for a fourth suspect who was seen with a large bag at the airport.

Some of the attackers were already known to French and Belgian security services and had links to terrorists who conducted attacks in Paris in November.

The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the Brussels attacks and warned of "black days" for the countries fighting it in Syria and Iraq, which includes several European Union nations.
