CAPMAS: 11.1% decline in average fresh water per capita consumption

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said the average per capita consumption of fresh water in 2013-2014 was 103.4 cubic meters compared to 116.3 cubic meters in 2012-2013, a decline of 11.1 percent due to the population increase.

CAPMAS said the total production of water in 2013-2014 was 11.7 billion cubic meters, of which 75.6 percent were pure and 24.4 percent were turbid.

It said 89.1 percent of the fresh water came from the Nile, 10.8 percent from wells and 0.1 percent from desalinated sea water.

It added that residential units consumed 68.9 percent of the fresh water, while non-residential units consumed 31.1 percent.

It attributed the increase in water waste from 23.5 percent in 2012-2013 to 25.6 percent in 2013-2014 to the deterioration of the distribution networks, water leakages from pipes and illegal water connections.
