CAPMAS: 19% increase in average public and private sector wages

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said the average wage for males in the public and private sectors was raised to LE769 in 2013, up 19 percent from the previous year, and for females to LE714, up 17.8 percent, with the public sector recording higher raises.

Former dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science Alia al-Mahdi said the disparity in wage levels between the public and private sectors gives a negative messages about the government’s employment policies.

“The private sector does not provide social and medical insurance like the public sector,” she said.

She suggested that perhaps the raise in the public sector could be linked to an increase in production.
