Churches to decide on Constituent Assembly withdrawal on Saturday

Church representatives in the Constituent Assembly have still not reached a conclusion on whether or not they will withdraw their participation, said Catholic Church spokesperson Youhanna Qelta on Friday.

The decision is to be announced in a statement on Saturday.

"The general atmosphere in the assembly does not suggest democracy and consensus," Qelta told Al-Masry Al-Youm. He added that the majority decides in case of disputes and consensus is not applied.

“Churches' representatives do not object Article 2,” Qelta said, because the majority of the nation is Muslim. “The problem is not about Muslims and Christians, it is about democracy.”

"The general atmosphere says we are heading toward a religious state," Qelta claimed.

Constituent Assembly member Marian Malak said that discussions were still ongoing to reach a compromise that would satisfy all parties.
