Clashes take place between security forces, Al-Azhar students

Clashes occurred Friday between pro-Muslim Brotherhood students and the security forces at Al-Azhar University in Nasr City as students staged a protest at the university's main gate.

Hundreds of pro-Muslim Brotherhood students staged a march after Friday prayers from the mosque located on Al-Azhar University campus blocking Mostafa al-Nahas Street. The security forces intervened, after which the clashes started.

The security forces threw tear gas to disperse the students who retreated to campus. The students used fireworks and pelted the security forces with rocks.

Security forces stepped up the presence in the vicinity of the university including more CSF vehicles and soldiers as well as armored vehicles.

Al-Azhar University announced closing campus for male and female students temporarily from 22 to 30 May so that students can participate in the presidential elections and to avoid clashes and riots.
