Court of Cassation upholds prison sentences against defendants in Nahda sit-in case

On Thursday, the Court of Cassation rejected the appeal of the defendants in the case known in media as the al-Nahda sit-in dispersal and upheld the sentences issued against them by the criminal court.

The number of defendants is 379, of whom 189 are detained.

Giza Criminal Court sentenced 17 defendants to life in prison, 223 others to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment, and 22 to three years in prison.

The court acquitted 115 defendants, and dropped the case for two defendants who are deceased.

The court also fined all defendants LE39 million for destruction of property at the Zoo, Orman Park, and the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University.

The Al-Nahda sit-in, staged by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, was dispersed in August 2013.
