Activists and political movements across Egypt organized a number of demonstrations on Monday in solidarity with pro-democracy protesters in central Cairo, condemning the violence meted out to them by soldiers and police since Friday.
In Daqahlia, Nile Delta, some 500 students from Mansoura University organized a march for the second consecutive day. The march began outside the Faculty of Medicine and circled the university’s campus. The protesters carried mock coffins and demanded that "the protesters’ killers” be brought to justice.
Dozens of members of the April 6 Youth Movement and the Kefaya movement protested outside the Daqahlia municipality, waving Egyptian flags and pictures of the victims. The protesters chanted “the people want to topple the Field Marshal,” and “Down, down with military rule!”
Dozens of Damietta City residents on Saidi Street organized a protest, demanding that the killing and abuse of protesters not go unpunished. They called for an immediate end to violence against protesters.
In Beni Suef, south of Cairo, hundreds of residents organized similar demonstrations, during which they prayed for the souls of the victims and chanted slogans including “Down, down with military rule!” and “Leave, leave Oh Field Marshal.”
Assiut University students in Upper Egypt, and activists from the Kefaya and We Are All Khaled SaidmMovements organized a protest outside the Southern District Military Command Headquarters in Assiut, to condemn violence against protesters at the cabinet sit-in.
The protesters demanded retribution against those they described as “thugs” and for them to be brought to trial. They chanted slogans such as “Leave, leave Oh Field Marshal if you cannot bring change!"
Meanwhile, Assiut’s Southern District Military Command infantry stpped up security at the main gates, including the deployment of armored vehicles. A military source said, “We are not against peaceful protesting, but we are against sabotage and vandalism of state property.”
