Diplomat denies rumors Egyptian Embassy staff in Libya under house arrest

An official diplomatic source at the Egyptian Embassy in Tripoli denied on Wednesday rumors that embassy employees are under house arrest.

The embassy crew is not eager to leave Libya and prefers to continue offering services for the Egyptian community there, the source said.

Libya has been in turmoil since 17 February and anti-regime protesters, joined by dissident army leaders, continue to clash with leader Muammar Gadhafi's forces.

The diplomatic source said the embassy is working freely, offering assistance in coordination with Libyan authorities to Egyptians who wish to leave Libya.

He said the evacuees are sent to the Ras Gadeer border between Tunisia and Libya in order to avoid military operation zones.
