Downtown gunfight leaves 60 injured

Sixty people were injured on Wednesday, including six policemen, as merchants on Abdel Aziz Street in Cairo exchanged gunfire and hurled stones at salesmen from a nearby neighborhood.

Cairo’s security chief, Mohamed Tolba, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that five stores were smashed as a result of the fight. He explained that two vendors tried to attract customers to their shop while standing in front of another store, which enraged store owners and prompted them to assault the pair. The two salesmen later gathered armed friends and returned to the area to fight back.

Army-backed police forces eventually subdued the fighting, later combing the area for people involved in the violence.

The injured were taken to Ahmed Maher Hospital in Cairo.
