Egypt legalizes 90 more churches, bringing total to 1,412 so far

The committee on the legalization of churches at its Tuesday meeting approved legalizing the status of 90 churches and affiliated buildings, bringing the number legalized since the committee began work a year-and-a-half ago to 1,412 churches and buildings, Prime Minister Spokesperson Nader Saad announced.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired the Tuesday meeting in the presence of ministers of justice, parliamentary affairs, local development, housing, and representatives of the concerned authorities and Christian communities.

Saad said that the committee reviewed the latest developments which took place since its last meeting on December 3, regarding the situation of the churches and its affiliated service buildings.

Given the critical importance of meeting these requirements to protect citizens and preserve property, the meeting reviewed the churches’ fulfillment of the civil protection requirements, praising what has been implemented in this regard, he added.

At the beginning of the meeting, Madbouly congratulated the Egyptian people for the new year as well as Christians for Christmas, wishing goodness for Egypt.
