Egypt refuses usage of military power against Qatar: Former Assistant Foreign Minister

In a step towards resolving the current political crisis between Qatar and other Arab countries, Qatari Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Bin Abdel Rahman arrived on Monday in Kuwait to deliver his country’s response on recent reconciliation conditions put forth by the four Arab countries boycotting Qatar.

According to Al-Jazeera, the Qatari Foreign Affairs Minister is acting as mediator to end the recent diplomatic boycott imposed by Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The boycott is due to charges against the Qatari government of sponsoring terrorism and being the main supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and other opposition groups.

Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah will receive the Qatari Foreign Affairs Minister who will deliver a hand-written response from the Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the reconciliation conditions.

Less than two weeks ago, the aforementioned Arab countries boycotting Qatar released a list of reconciliation conditions, namely, calling on Qatar to suspend the broadcasting of the country’s world-renowned news channel Al-Jazeera.

“If the Arab countries receive negative feedback from Qatar on the reconciliation conditions, then they will follow strict measures to increase the siege against Qatar, which may include freezing all Arabs’ monetary credit in Qatari banks,” former assistant to the Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Adel al-Safty told Egypt Independent on Monday.

He asserted that the Qatari government will not get any benefit from refusing the Arab countries’ conditions, as this will harm the country in regards to politics and economic standing.

On whether the political crisis between Qatar and the aforementioned countries may escalate to military intervention, Safty stressed that Egypt will not resort to military action against Qatar.

“Egypt is not following such measures against any Arab countries,” he said.

The Egyptian Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement that a meeting will take place on Wednesday with the presence of Foreign Affairs Ministers from Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to follow up on the crisis.

“The meeting will discuss the future steps that will be undertaken by the four Arab countries towards Qatar,” the statement read.
