Egypt reopens Rafah border crossing

Egyptian authorities on Saturday reopened the Rafah border crossing, the state news agency MENA has reported. An official source from the crossing said travelers from both sides have begun flocking to the border.

Since the crossing was opened after undergoing maintenance work on 28 May, 8045 people have crossed into Egypt, and 4568 into Gaza.

It was agreed recently that the crossing will be opened on weekdays and closed on Fridays and official vacations. Palestinians are currently allowed into Egypt through all road crossings and airports according to the rules implemented before 2007, which means that Palestinian women of all ages, males under 18 and above 40, and students enrolled in Egyptian universities may enter without visas.

Among other categories, Palestinians referred for medical treatment in Egypt and children accompanied by parents who are not required to carry a visa may also enter without visas.
