Egypt soccer coach survives collision on Ring Road, one dead

A coach to Egypt’s national soccer team survived a collision of five cars above the Ring Road in Monib, Giza, on Thursday.

Ahmed Nagi, who coaches the team's goalkeepers, survived the accident, but another person involved in the crash was killed. The identity of this person has not been released.

A lorry belonging to a foodstuff company stopped suddenly in the middle of the road, causing the collision with cars coming from behind, police said.

Seven people were wounded in the accident which, according to security sources, caused a one-hour halt to traffic.

Egypt has one of the world’s highest traffic-accident mortality rates.

In December, the government’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said the number of car accidents during the first half of 2015 rose by 3.5 percent to a total of 6,916 accidents, compared with 6,685 accidents during the same period in 2014.

The number of deaths, however, decreased by 2.7 percent, from 3,025 to 2,808 deaths in the first half of 2015.
