Egypt striker Mido retires

Egyptian striker, Ahmed (Mido) Hossam, has announced his retirement from professional football after an illustrious career straddling 2 continents.

"Today, I announce my final retirement from football. I thank everybody who has given me support throughout my career, especially fans in my great country,” the 30-year-old forward tweeted on Tuesday.

Mido ends a career that saw him play for top-flight teams in Europe, including Ajax in the Netherlands, Marseille in France, Roma in Italy and Tottenham Hotspurs in England.

“Some of these clubs should be proud that I played for them and I’m proud I played for some of them,” Mido added.

Mido debuted for the Egyptian national squad in January 2011, appearing for his final game against Malawi in December 2009.

He was part of the squad that brought Egypt its fifth African Cup title.

Mido scored 19 goals and played took home 51 caps for his national side.
