Egypt utilizes opportunities to increase energy resources: Minister

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohammed Shaker said on behalf of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, at the opening of al-Ahram’s annual conference “Energy, Investment Horizons and Development Opportunities” that many global changes have led to an energy transformation, and that the Egyptian government is working to utilize these current opportunities to increase energy resources required for economic and social development plans.

The Egyptian government has taken several reform measures and policies as part of a new strategy which aims to ensure supply, sustainability and proper governance, he added.

Shaker said that these policies seek to eliminate frequent power outages and achieve a safe reserve of electrical energy, pointing out that during the past five years the energy sector has added well over 28 gigawatts.

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy set an integrated plan to raise the efficiency of electricity networks and improve electricity transmission, distribution and smart meters with a total investment of over four billion dollars.

Shaker said that the Egyptian government set an energy strategy until 2035, which includes maximizing the rates of renewable energy by 42 percent of the total installed capacity in 2035, as part of a strategy utilizing Egypt’s natural renewable energy sources.

The Egyptian Cabinet’s Media Center said in December that Egypt’s ranking in the Climate Change Performance Index 2019 rose to 24 compared to 28 in 2018, in addition to Egypt ranking 32nd place worldwide and third place in the Middle East and North Africa in the index of renewable energy regulation efficiency in the Global Competitiveness Report 2019.
