Egyptian ambassador to Palestine says situation in Gaza ‘catastrophic’

The Egyptian Ambassador to Palestine Wael Nassr Eddin Atteya said that the number of victims in Gaza was 200 by the time the Egyptian initiative was launched on 14 July. However, the number of deaths has now neared 2,000 victims, while the injured are more than 8,000.

"The number of displaced individuals surpassed 300,000, which makes it hard for international humanitarian relief organizations to handle the situation," Atteya added. "This is a human catastrophe."

Atteya also said that Egypt took the initiative of opening the Rafah border crossing over the past 30 days to allow patients in.

According to Atteya, Egypt has also facilitated the passage of human aid convoys and medical teams coming from other countries through Rafah into Gaza.
