Egyptian embassy following up on case of Egyptian beaten by police

The Egyptian Embassy in Paris is communicating with French authorities after an Egyptian man was allegedly beaten by Parisian police on 14 December for carrying an invalid metro ticket, according to Egyptian diplomatic sources.

Hassan al-Shazly, 23, a contractor who has worked in France for five years, claims to have been beaten by French police after failing to show proof that he was eligible for the discounted metro ticket he was carrying. He was taken to hospital for treatment after the assault.

A diplomatic source told MENA on Saturday that the embassy is following up with French authorities to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. The French foreign ministry said it is determined to find out what really happened, ensuring at the same time that justice will be served.

The same source added that the embassy has been in touch with Shazly to check on his condition after he left hospital. The embassy has tasked some of its lawyers and Egyptians residing in France to follow up on the case, adding that a complaint has been filed over the incident.
