Egyptian police kill 4 terrorists involved in Arish checkpoint attack

Egypt’s Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that police forces have eliminated four terrorists involved in an attack on Arish, North Sinai, following a shootout in a raid on the city’s Abu Aita region.

On Wednesday terrorists attacked the Batal 14 checkpoint in Arish during Eid al-Fitr holiday, killing eight police officers while five terrorists were killed during the attack.

An Interior Ministry statement on Saturday said that the forces raided a building in the city and responded to gunfire from the terrorists.

After the shootout, police found three automatic guns and an explosive belt in terrorist’s hideout. The police have prepared a report on the incident and prosecution were notified for further investigations.

Since 2014, North Sinai has witnessed a growing number of terrorist attacks carried out in the Sinai Province, including various attacks on the army and the police.

This increase in terrorism followed the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi. Morsi’s party was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt subsequently banned as a terrorist group.
