Egypt’s government denies monitoring social media chats

The Cabinet’s media center denied claims on Tuesday that the government has monitored chats across social media including Facebook and Twitter in accordance to the Information Technology Crimes Law.

According to the media center’s statement, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology denied these rumors and stressed that the law was free from any articles stipulating to monitor chats of social media users.

The law focuses on protecting the privacy of people and criminalizes the disclosure of their data, the center clarified, adding that the law has achieved a balance between combating the illegal use of computers and information networks and protecting governmental and individual data from hacking.

The law also stipulated on the legal protection of the privacy of the citizens’ private life and preservation of non-disclosure of information.
