Egypt’s military ruler holds talks with US Central Command chief

The head of Egypt’s ruling military council met on Tuesday with the head of US Central Command, the state-run news agency MENA reported.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, held talks with General James Mattis, who is visiting Cairo with a delegation.

The meeting tackled the latest regional and international developments, issues of common interest and bilateral military ties, MENA said.

Mattis also met with Egypt’s military Chief of Staff Sami Anan to discuss military cooperation, MENA said.

Several senior military leaders attended the meeting, as well as US Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson.

On Monday, Anan met with Central Command’s air force chief David Goldfein.

Egypt receives nearly US$1.2 billion in annual military aid from the US, and both states reguarly engage in joint war games.
