Environment ministry investigates serving of endangered ‘Napoleon fish’ in Red Sea hotel

After images allegedly showed the endangered ‘Napoleon fish’ being served in a hotel-restaurant in the Red Sea town of Marsa Alam, the Minister of Environment, Khalid Fahmy, instructed the Red Sea Protected Areas Authority to investigate how this came to occur.

The Napoleon fish, less commonly known as the humphead wrasse, is classified by scientists as a threatened species. The environment minister has been demonstrably keen on protecting rare species due to their contribution to the biological diversification in the Red Sea, with their stunning colors attracting enthusiastic tourists and divers.

The Red Sea Protected Areas Authority identified the hotel’s name after German tourists published photos of the fish being prepared on social media.

Since, the hotel’s director provided a written statement pledging not to display or serve the fish in the hotel-restaurant, in respect of environmental law.
