Ethiopian officials hold ‘constant meetings’ over emergency state: Ethiopian Ambassador

Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt Taye Atske-Selassie Amde said on Monday that his country has requested a postponement of the tripartite ministerial meeting between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was scheduled to be held in Sudan on February 24-25, following the current instability in Ethiopia.

“Ethiopian officials who are scheduled to attend this meeting [currently] hold constant meetings and carry out other important [domestic] tasks,” explained Amde. The requested postponement of the meeting, he says, is related to the state of emergency in Ethiopia following the resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

Amde asserted that Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan will hold the meeting at another time, while Ethiopia aims to focus on discussing legitimate demands for reform, and to curb the internal threats as well as maintain political and security stability.

He added that the new prime minister is yet to be named, as the process for the transition of power in Ethiopia is carried out in accordance with the Ethiopian constitution.
