Ex-NCHR head to Mubarak: ‘Egypt needs peaceful revolution’

“I wrote to President Hosni Mubarak to tell him that he ought to lead a peaceful revolution in Egypt,” Ahmed Kamal Abul Magd, former chairman of the government-run National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), said on Thursday.

Speaking at a conference organized by the Arab Women’s Association, Abul Magd also said that he had warned the president that Egypt’s national security "would be at greater risk than it is now if this step is not taken.”

He noted that Egypt's political opposition was wrongly perceived by Egyptian society as working against the interests of the country.

“This shouldn't be the case,” he said. “The opposition and the ruling regime are but two sides of the same coin.”
