Expats: Closing Egypt’s embassy in Geneva favors Brotherhood

The Egyptian government's decision to close the Egyptian consulate in Geneva cast a shadow over the Egyptian community there, estimated at 10,000 Egyptians.

Some Egyptian expatriates in Geneva complained that the step would boost the Muslim Brotherhood anti-government activities in Geneva amid the absence of an official representatives to the Egyptian state.

The Muslim Brotherhood moved their activities to Geneva instead of a number of European countries, most notably London, which reportedly was still considering whether to label the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

The Muslim Brotherhood established a human rights organization in Geneva under Justice for Egypt and launched as well the Revolutionary Council, presided over by Maha Azzam. The council organized campaigns and events against the regime and military leaders in Egypt following the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

According to Egyptian expatriates in Geneva, the absence of official representatives to the state in Geneva, which constitutes an important economic and political center hosting many UN and international organizations, would prevent Egyptian authorities from clarifying their situation.
