Fighting continues over scarce diesel and butane

Shortages in the supply of diesel fuel and butane gas cylinders led to fights among citizens in several cities on Wednesday.

In Alexandria, cars blocked the Corniche road as drivers parked in queues before gas stations to buy fuel.

In Beheira, 18 people were injured in a fight with knives and clubs over limited quantities of available diesel at a gas station.

Similar clashes erupted among citizens as they stormed cylinder distribution outlets in several cities.

Meanwhile, the army managed to thwart an attempt to smuggle 180 tons of diesel to sell it to ships passing through the Suez Canal.

The General Petroleum Authority said it would increase butane imports by approximately 20 percent this year in order to meet local demand.
