Environmental teams clean up Gamsha Bay oil spill

Teams from the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency on Wednesday contained and cleaned up after an oil leak in Gamsha Bay, north of Hurghada.

The area had suffered an onshore and offshore oil spill Monday resulting from a leak at a General Petroleum Company well that emitted large quantities of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas.

This is the seventh leak since September. The teams are also working to prevent leaks from recurring.

Company Safety Director Hassan Abdel Salam on Monday said the company is drilling three wells in Gamsha to stop crude oil leaks.

He accused researchers of failing to put an end to the leak that has been continuing for several months, as they did not conduct a geophysical survey of the area to explore the size of the crude oil reserve.

The Environment Ministry fined the company LE2 million following a gas leak in the same area in October.
