Germany to return smuggled artifact to Egypt in March 4 ceremony

A rare artifact will be returned to Egypt on March 4 in a ceremony held by the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin.

Egypt's Ambassador to Berlin Badr Abdel Aaty will attend the ceremony and the artifact will be handed over to Abdel Aaty by German Cultural Affairs Minister Maria Baumer.

Politicians and officials from the German Foreign Ministry as well as journalists, diplomats, university professors and members of the Egyptian Embassy in Berlin will attend the ceremony.

The recovered artifact is a bowl dating back to between the 27th to the 30th pharaonic dynasties B.C. It was a piece out of four pieces that had been smuggled from Egypt and specifically from Saqqara area, said Abdel Aaty. The bowl was seized by German authorities in 2009 during an attempt to smuggle it from Switzerland to Germany, he added.

The three other artifacts were retrieved earlier by Egypt.
