Head of Cairo appeals court steps down from administrative tasks

Head of the Cairo Court of Appeals Abdel Moez Ibrahim recused himself on Tuesday from his administrative duties. The court’s emergency general assembly formed a committee consisting of the three most senior advisers to take over the court’s administrative tasks.

The decision was made in conjunction with the formation of an emergency general assembly consisting of 150 judges on Tuesday to discuss Ibrahim’s role in the NGO foreign funding case and the extent of his involvement in the lifting of the travel ban on foreign defendants in the case.

President of the Supreme Judicial Council Hossam al-Gheriany met with the appeals court judges on the sidelines of their general assembly, and the judges demanded that he withdraw Ibrahim’s authorities and summon him for questioning.

Gheriany said was looking into the incident, and if Ibrahim was found to have interfered in the court proceedings then he would be sent to trial.
