Health Ministry approves new diabetes drug

The Health and Population Ministry approved Wednesday a new drug to adjust the level of blood sugar over a 24-hour period.

The drug is used once a day, the ministry said, adding that the drug could be available on the market in a month.

The drug, named Degludec, will help diabetics avoid fainting.

Degludec is used to treat diabetes, Type II, without impact on renal function, and resembles in 97 percent of its combination the natural hormone of the body, which reduces antibodies, and maintains its efficiency within the body for 24 hours, the ministry said in a statement.

A diabetes coma results from the decrease of the level of glucose in the blood or eating a large dose of sugar and neglecting meals on time, said Professor of Internal Medicine at Alexandria University's Faculty of Medicine Fahmy Amara.
