Health study shows jump in state-hospital visitors

Government hospitals saw a significant increase in patients during 2012, according to a Health Ministry study.

On Wednesday, the ministry’s Mental Health Secretariat released a report showing more than 430,000 people were visited or were admitted to state hospitals last year.

Over 411,000 were outpatients, who received treatment at a hospital but were not admitted, which accounts for an increase of 60,000 people versus 2011 and 100,000 patients compared to 2010.

The rest were categorized as inpatients or those admitted to medical facilities.

According to the report, the number inpatients on a monthly basis averaged 1,558 people last year versus 1,393 patients in 2011 and 1,263 needing care in 2010.

July and September recorded the highest number of inpatient cases for 2012. Some 1,648 people were admitted in July, while 1,858 were admitted in September.
