Heated confrontation erupts between Egypt and Israel at non-proliferation symposium

Sources at a European Union-hosted Middle East security symposium hosted on Wednesday said that a heated confrontation erupted when the Egyptian delegation criticized Israel for not signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and not allowing the International Atomic Energy Agency to inspect the supposed nuclear reactor in the town of Dimona.

Egypt rejected Israel’s justification of possessing nuclear arms in order to protect itself from Arab countries and Iran.

The symposium’s goal was to discuss how to establish the Middle East as a region free of weapons of mass destruction in order to preempt potential arms races or nuclear proliferation.

The symposium was attended by several states, including Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran.
