Iranian Revolutionary Guard denies meeting with Egyptian officials

Hossein Salami, the deputy commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, denied that corp leaders met with Egyptian officials last week.

Some foreign media sources had reported that Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the corp’s Qods Force, visited Egyptian leaders during his visit to Cairo, the Iranian news agency Fars said on Monday.

The Qods Forces is responsible for the corps’ foreign operations.

President Mohamed Morsy’s office also denied reports that Soleimani had met with the president’s assistant, Essam al-Haddad.

British journalists had claimed that Suleimani visited Cairo for two days, during which he held talks with Haddad and Muslim Brotherhood officials to "discuss supporting the government in building its security and intelligence agencies separate from the national security services controlled by the army.”

Morsy met with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi during his visit to Egypt two days ago amid reports of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s planned visit to Cairo to attend the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in February.
