Judges Club mulls new bill for judicial authority against Parliament’s amendments

Hazem Rasmi, official spokesperson of the Judges Club, said the advisory board decided at the end of its meeting on Monday to postpone indefinitely the General Assembly that was supposed to convene on Friday to consider the response to the government's issuance of the judicial authority law.

In remarks on Monday, Rasmi said the meeting tackled the measures that could be taken after the law was ratified by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The board will issue a statement on the crisis later

Meanwhile, the attendees rejected the resignation of Mohamed Mansour, the club chairman.

Judicial sources said the judges discussed drafting a new bill for the judicial authority, as well as measures of appeal at the Supreme Constitutional Court against the amendments, which grant the president the right to select one of three candidates to head the judicial authorities.

The sources added that the decision comes to avoid confrontations with judges of the Supreme Judiciary Council and divisions that would destabilize the country.

Division occurred at the meeting of heads of the governorates judges clubs, the sources said. Some proposed postponing the General Assembly and challenging the new law, while others suggested holding an urgent General Assembly on Friday at the High Court to tackle the issue.
