Kuwait police reportedly beat Egyptian over car crash

An Egyptian living in Kuwait says he was beaten by police there when he tried to report a traffic collision involving an officer, Egyptian state television reported Wednesday.

The Egyptian Consulate has contacted Kuwaiti authorities to request more information and a consulate staffer is scheduled to go to the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry along with the man and eyewitnesses to file a complaint against the alleged perpetrators.

Kuwait Human Rights News said a police officer had hit the Egyptian citizen's car near Fahd al-Ahmad district. Following the crash, they went to the Abu Halifa Police Station where the expatriate was insulted, struck on his head and back and forced to waive his right to report the collision, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported, citing the human rights news website.

Kuwait Human Rights News said it would submit the Egyptian's medical reports to the Inspection and Control Department within the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry, along with the testimonies of eyewitnesses.

Lawyer Mohamed al-Hamiedy, head of the Kuwait Society for Human Rights, said he would file a complaint with Kuwaiti Public Prosecutor Derar al-Assousy.
