Mahalla workers end strike as govt promises resolution

Hundreds of workers at Egypt’s state-run Misr for Spinning and Weaving Company in Gharbiya ended an 11-day strike over delayed bonuses on Sunday, after authorities promised to respond to their demands.

Workers at the company’s branch in Gharbiya’s Mahalla, as well as at other branches, had staged strikes the past few weeks over the Finance Ministry's decision to withhold the 10 percent annual bonus previously approved by the presidency but later limited to workers in certain government sectors.

Manpower Minister Gamal Sorour said on Sunday that he had met with Gharbiya’s governor and representatives from the Investment Ministry and the textile industry. He said the meeting ended with him promising to resolve the worker’s problem within 48 hours after operations resume at the factories.
