Minister: Egypt’s 2nd nuclear plant to be built in Al-Negila

The area of Al-Negila, located south of the coastal town of  Marsa Matrouh, has been chosen for the site of Egypt’s second nuclear power station, Electricity and Energy Minister Hassan Younis said in press statements on Wednesday.

“We have already applied for a license to build four nuclear reactors at the site of Al-Dabaa,” the minister said, adding that the Nuclear Safety Center had made certain "remarks" before granting the license. “We are currently responding to these remarks.”

“We will also establish workshops for the Egyptian companies that will participate in construction of the station so as to familiarize them with our quality standards,” Younis said.

The minister also presented a report issued by the Nuclear Stations Authority that included technical studies of 14 types of nuclear reactor cooled by normal or heavy water. He went on to point out that specialized Russian, French, US, Canadian and Japanese companies had already submitted offers for construction of the reactors.

“We will receive another offer from a Chinese company later this month,” he added.

“We will also run 27 training programs, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency, for Egyptian nuclear technicians,” Younis said.
