Minya train shooter ‘suffers from mental disorder’

The policeman who opened fire on board a train traveling between Upper Egypt and Cairo, killing one and injuring five, suffers from an unspecified mental disorder, say security sources.

Employment records for the policeman show that he was stripped of the right to carry a firearm three years ago, the sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm. The decision was based on a medical report which stated that the policeman suffered from a mental disorder.

The same sources denied that the shooter had been intent on killing Coptic Christians, saying that if he had wished to target Copts, he would have carried out the killing at a time when he was put in charge of church security.

Meanwhile, General Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has ordered Minya's Attorney General to visit the crime scene and inform him of the outcome of investigations.
