Money changers and jewelers mull closing down

Fearing robbery, money changers and jewelers in the Cairo’s downtown district mulled closing their shops until order is restored to the streets.

“Jewelers have already cleared their display windows and deposited the items in banks,” said Bishry Ibrahim of the Chamber of Commerce.

“They have also placed iron shields and contracted security services with loaded guns to protect their shops,” he added. “The next step is to close down altogether.”

His colleague, Amir Rizq, said jewelers only display 10 percent of their products so as to reduce risk.

Likewise, Mohamed al-Abyad, head of the Money Changers Union, said currency changers are considering closing their shops for similar reasons.
